Balbirnie House Hotel in Fife is one of the region’s premier Scottish wedding venues and it provided the perfect setting for Emma and Stewart’s autumn wedding. As a Glasgow wedding photographer, I love the variety this venue offers, from elegant period rooms to modern function spaces, extensive lawns and gardens and nearby natural woodland. The autumn colours were ideal for outdoor wedding photography in Fife, giving a beautiful seasonal backdrop that the couple were excited to feature in their wedding photos.
‘Thank you so much for your work, the photos are beautiful. We had a really lovely time looking over the photographs last night and there are some very special ones that we will treasure forever – thank you for capturing those moments for us.’

Location Planning for Autumn Wedding Photography
Although I had done a wedding venue recce at Balbirnie House months earlier, I arrived early on the wedding day to check locations for autumn photography. The low October sun and wet lawns meant the gardens weren’t practical, so I explored the nearby woodland and parkland just a short walk from the hotel. Even on an overcast day, the trees and autumn foliage provided the perfect setting for natural couple portraits and outdoor wedding photography.
Bridal Preparation and Special Wedding Gifts
The morning started with Emma getting ready in the bridal suite with her bridesmaids. The atmosphere was relaxed and I captured candid moments alongside detail shots of her wedding dress, bouquet and shoes. Emma also wanted me to photograph the gifts and letters that she and Stewart exchanged before the ceremony, intimate touches that are perfect for storytelling wedding photography. Stewart was downstairs in the study with his Best Man and I captured him opening Emma’s letter and gift, creating a wonderful moment.
Fun Moments at the Ceremony
The wedding ceremony took place in the Orangerie at Balbirnie House which is a bright and elegant wedding space. Stewart made a grand entrance with his Best Man and ushers, followed by Emma’s arrival. A particularly fun moment was the “mystery ring bearer,” where the rings are hidden under someone’s seat. Knowing in advance who the lucky guest would be, allowed me to capture the perfect reaction for the wedding photo gallery.
Confetti, Family Photos, and Guest Shots
Emma and Stewart wanted a confetti shot and a full group photo of all their wedding guests. After the ceremony I guided everyone to the steps outside the hotel for cheers, confetti, and candid wedding photography before arranging family photos in the gardens. When the rain started we moved inside for relaxed indoor shots, allowing guests to mingle and enjoy drinks. Once the rain eased, we made our way to the nearby woodland for a couples photoshoot. I even drove Emma closer to the location to keep her dress clean, making it practical for outdoor autumn wedding photography.
Natural Couple Portraits
Autumn light can be magical, even on overcast days. My approach to wedding couple photography is to let people be themselves, subtly guiding them while they interact naturally. Emma and Stewart were very relaxed together which allowed me to capture authentic, romantic moments without formal posing, perfect for their natural wedding photography style.
Capturing the Reception at Balbirnie House
The main function room at Balbirnie House looked stunning with curtains of lights, creating the ideal backdrop for Fife wedding reception photography. I captured candid expressions during the speeches and later photographed their private cake-cutting before guests joined for the evening celebrations.
Sparkler Arch and Evening Dancing
Evening photography at Balbirnie House was a highlight, featuring a sparkler arch for Emma and Stewart’s grand exit. The couple then enjoyed dancing with family and friends which was a perfect way to end a day filled with memories.
