Ella and John were incredibly lucky with the weather for their winter wedding at Glasgow wedding venue Boclair House Hotel. As a Glasgow wedding photographer, I always plan for all weather conditions but their day turned out crisp and bright with clear blue skies and beautiful low winter sunlight.
I like to arrive early at a wedding to check all potential locations for photos and even with the perfect weather, there were a few challenges to navigate for the best results in Boclair House wedding photography.
John and I just wanted to say a huge thank you for being such an important part of our wedding day. We couldn’t have had a better photographer.’
John & Ella
Frosty Winter Morning
Although the sun was shining the front steps leading up to Boclair House were icy, which made it tricky to organise the big group photo that Ella and John wanted. The staff were fantastic and quickly put down salt on the steps, so we could safely use them for photos. Another consideration was the low January sun, which could have caused the guests to squint, so I carefully used angles to make sure the light was natural and flattering for all the wedding photography.
Pre-Ceremony Shots
Ella and John chose not to have bridal or groom preparation but there was still time for a few pre-ceremony shots. I captured EIlidh in her dress with her parents and bridesmaids in the bridal suite creating relaxed, natural images before the ceremony began.
Embracing the Imperfections
The ceremony was full of many memorable moments. Both of their mums lit candles together to symbolise the joining of the two families. In a humorous twist, the middle candle was already lit when Ella and John tried to light it, causing great amusement. Moments like this are perfect examples of why natural wedding photography in Glasgow works so well.
Naval Sword Arch
After the ceremony, John’s colleagues from the Royal Navy created a dramatic sword arch. I coordinated with them to find the best angles for this unique military wedding moment.
Winter Family Photography
Because it was so cold, we moved the family group photos indoors in front of the Christmas tree, keeping everyone warm and comfortable. For the couple portraits outside I chose safe, icy-free locations with Boclair House Hotel and the pagoda in the background. Ella and John simply enjoyed the moment, letting me capture natural, relaxed images.
Drinks Reception and Speeches
With everything running smoothly, there was plenty of time to capture candid shots of Ella and John mingling with their guests. The speeches were very entertaining and emotional, providing lots of opportunities for photographs focused on real reactions and genuine expressions.
Evening and First Dance Photography
Winter evenings arrive early, so I staged a few evening photos using the lit arches and tower at the front of Boclair House, which provided a dramatic backdrop. The day ended perfectly with Ella and John’s first dance , accompanied by an amazing live band.
