Not only did they want something rustic but also somewhere where they could relax and enjoy the day. They also wanted a wedding photographer who could fit in with their plans and capture the day in a natural way.
‘Thank you for all you did on the day, the photos mean a lot to us. You captured the day beautifully’
James & Rachel
As a wedding photographer, I like to arrive quite early so I can make some final check on the location. I’d photographed a wedding at Dalduff Farm earlier in the year in March but as James and Rachel’s wedding was in June the weather was very different. Back in March some of the lawns had been very wet and soggy and not ideal for a bride and bridal party to be walking on so I wanted to see if some of those areas were now possibilities.
After the recce I popped into the farm house where Rachel and her bridesmaids were getting ready with her Mum. Everyone was very relaxed so there were lots of opportunities for candid photography while everyone was getting ready. I then headed back to Ayr as James and Rachel were getting married at Ayr Cathedral.
Telling the Story of the Day
Things are usually a little more formal in Church weddings as there are fewer opportunity to wander about but I had a chat with the priest who was very friendly and had a clear idea of what was possible. During the service I noticed some amazing light coming in through the stained glass windows, so I took a few shots of these. Although it was a minor detail, shots like this can help create a little atmosphere when telling the story of the day.
Little Moments
After the service everyone headed back to Dalduff Farm for the drinks and evening wedding reception. After letting James and Rachel enjoy some champagne and settle in, I spent some time with James and Rachel using Dalduff Farm and the countryside as the background for the wedding photography. I like to create little moments, rather than choreograph everything, so I suggested some areas for them to walk or sit and took shots while encouraging them to enjoy the moment.
The speeches before the meal proved to be fun and quite emotional. It’s a great opportunity to capture people’s expressions. After the meal everyone went outside for drinks while the venue was turned around for the evening reception. This proved to be another great opportunity for some natural candid wedding photography before the dancing started.
